2012 Big Conference Football Preview

2011 record: (2-10, 0-9 Big 12)

Head Coach: Charlie Weis (35-27, Sixth Season overall, first at Kansas)

Turner Gill was fired as the Jayhawks Head Coach after two forgettable seasons in Lawrence after compiling a poor 5-19 record. In his place is former Notre Dame Head Coach Charlie Weis to turn around a Jayhawk program that hit rock bottom, but the road back to respectability won’t be easy.

Offense

On the offensive side of the ball, the Jayhawks will improve dramatically improve under Weis and will have Notre Dame transfer Dayne Crist at Quarterback to run the offense. Kansas ranked in the bottom of the conference in scoring and in the passing attack. Wide Receiver D.J. Beshears returns as the leading wide out and will help ease the transition of Crist on the offense. Look for Running Back Jordan Sims to flirt with the 1,000 yard mark rushing the football.

Defense

On defense, not much can be said of the Jayhawks. They were slightly worse than the Red Raiders (but not by much) where Kansas was dead last in scoring defense and yards given up. There is some hope, however. Dave Campo, former Dallas Cowboys Head Coach and longtime NFL assistant was brought on to be Defensive Coordinator.

Projected Record: 2-10, 0-9 Big 12

Kansas will improve this season, but the win-loss record won’t indicate a change until 2013. Early wins over South Dakota State and Rice will give this team confidence, but the long season will get longer when the conference season begins and the losses will pile up.

10/6 at Kansas State - Loss
