6 Lubbock Things That Went Away Too Soon

Have you ever found a place you really liked then went there one day and found the door locked? It's happened more than a few times in Lubbock.

So what exactly are 'Lubbock Things'? I didn't define this by things that were invented or exclusive to the Hub City, but most turned out that way.

Here are six things that used to be in Lubbock that I wish could have hung around a little longer.

The Godbold
For a brief moment there, it looked like the Godbold was going to be a performance center. You may not know it, but there is an incredible theater-type live music setup in there and a lot of other rooms that could be used for shows and other events. There are also cool outdoor areas.
I don't know why it started transitioning to something else, but it was very, very cool while it lasted. In case you didn't know, it was originally the hospital Buddy Holly was born in.

The Lindsey Theater
I don't know why the The Lindsey Theater came and went so soon. It apparently was an old theater that was revamped and used as a concert venue for a very short time. I know the Maines brothers played the venue, and I saw Adam Ant there. It was an incredible venue and it seemed to open and close in the blink of an eye.

Players
Yep, I put a strip club on here. Like it or not, this type of establishment is a sign of civilization and it is VERY much an attraction for sports recruiting and out-of-town visitors.
Once this place closed, bars like it were zoned out of town. Now, no offense to Jaguar's; this is more about the place being in town rather than on the edge of it.

Carl's Jr.
Oh man, I can taste those charbroiled burgers just by typing the name Carl's Jr. We certainly don't have a shortage of burger joints here (and I love my Whataburger), but Carl's Jr. offered a great alternative. They even started adding a whole "Green Burrito" menu that I never got to try.

The Lubbock Renegades & Cotton Kings
We're going to count this two-fer as one. I guess you could also include the Lubbock Crickets Baseball team, but I much preferred these indoor sports.
You could sit back, drink a beer, hoot & holler and just have a big time in the Lubbock Coliseum.
I really don't know what it's going to take to get Lubbock to support a semi-pro team of any type. Maybe just more time and a bigger population.

Coach Mike Leach
I don't know of hardly anybody in this town that doesn't think that Mike Leach got a bad rap. It doesn't mean that we don't love Coach Kliff, it just means we jettisoned a man who brought a lot of attention to Lubbock a little too soon.
Leach put Texas Tech back on the national map and consistently in the playoff picture. I guess I could also include coach Bobby Knight here, too.
