It's almost summer, and what melon is the lauded hero of summer? Of course it's watermelon. Everywhere you look, it's watermelon, watermelon, watermelon. But there's another melon that is just as good, if not better. Here's why.

Brenda Duby with United Supermarkets says that not only are cantaloupes delicious, they have health benefits that qualify them to be the melon hero of summer.

But how do tell when a cantaloupe is ripened to the peak of sweetness?

Brenda said that you look for the skin, which looks like a net, to be slightly raised. The cantaloupe should feel kind of heavy and have a fresh melon fragrance. There shouldn't be any soft spots and the ends should be smooth.

Brenda also recommends rinsing the cantaloupe off before you slice it the same way you rinse any fruit or veggie before you eat it.

Pair it with salty meats, cottage cheese, cheese or yogurt.

Cantaloupes are packed with nutrition and an all-around good food. Here are five reasons why it's the real hero of summer.
