Are the Spurs the Best Veteran Team in Sports? — Sports Survey of the Day

You hear it all the time in professional sports—’These guys are too old, they can’t hack it anymore’—but the San Antonio Spurs are beating teams half their age, and have been doing so for over a decade.

In 1999 the San Antonio Spurs began a run of success that would include four NBA titles, and they were contenders every year. So how have they done it with the same three guys since 2002?

Tim Duncan is 37, Manu Ginobili is 35 and Tony Parker is the youngster of the bunch at 30. Then you take key players like Matt Bonner, 33, and you have to wonder how these guys are beating young teams like the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers and Celtics, also teams packed with veterans, were both eliminated in the first round.

We haven’t seen a team with this many veterans able to hang in the mix for a championship in any sport in a very long time. So what’s in the water in San Antonio?
