Candace Whitaker Named Head Coach of Texas Tech Lady Raider Basketball

Texas Tech has named Candace Whitaker as new head coach of the Lady Raider Basketball program.

Whitaker was previously an assistant at Oklahoma State and a head coach at the University of Missouri at Kansas City compiling at record of 77-93 going to the post season WNIT in 2012.

Whitaker took over at UMKC in mid-season of the 2006-2007 season and built the program into a conference title contender.

Texas Tech will hold a news conference to formally introduce Coach Whitaker at 11 a.m. on Wed., May 22, in the City Bank Room at United Spirit Arena.

Whitaker played at Texas Tech under Marsha Sharp from 2000-2002 as starting point guard leading the Lady Raiders to consecutive Sweet 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

I am excited to welcome Candi back to Texas Tech,” Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt,” stated in a press release to the media Monday morning.

It is indeed special to have a former student-athlete return to lead a program that they were a significant part of.

Her leadership characteristics as a starting point guard and coach, her ties to West Texas, her experience as a Division I head coach, as well as the fact that she is a Red Raider makes her the perfect fit to lead the Lady Raider Basketball into the future.”

Whitaker is a Canyon, Texas native. She and her husband Matt have a child, a son named Westin.
