Emergency responders were called Tuesday afternoon (June 5) for a report of a chemical spill in Southeast Lubbock.

The spill was reported around 2 p.m. near 46th Street and MLK after a call to the Cotey Chemical Corp.

The spill started from a 330 gallon container of hydrochloric acid that ruptured. The acid ran out of a business through the parking lot and onto the street.

Emergency crews said the spill doesn’t pose any harm to the public, and that it was "a very strong form of what is used in swimming pools."

Lubbock Fire Rescue has blocked MLK Avenue between 40th and 50th Street until the spill is cleaned up. Drivers should use an alternate route if possible.
