The 2012-2013 season for Texas Tech Red Raider Basketball started off on a very awkward foot with the drama surrounding former Head Coach Billy Gillispie.

Gillispie resigned after allegations of player mistreatment and violations of NCAA rules for practicing longer than allowed.

Texas Tech stands at 9-9 on the season and 2-5 in Big 12 Conference play with 11 games left in the season under Interim Head Coach Chris Walker.

The Red Raiders have had some bad losses, most of them at home against Arizona (85-57), Arizona State (77-62), McNeese State (80-75), and Baylor (82-48).

Even with those losses, the Red Raiders have improved and improved mightily from last season’s 8-23 record and 1-17 Big 12 record.

The emergence of junior forward Jaye Crockett as one of the best sixth men in the conference has helped lead this young Red Raider team with eight freshmen and sophomores as the leading scorer and rebounder.

One of those is freshman is guard Josh Gray who is averaging 9.3 points and 2 assists per game.

The re-emergence of forward Jordan Tolbert the past few games in conference have given the Red Raiders a decent front court with Dejan Kravic who is scoring 9.3 points and grabbing 5.1 rebounds per game.

Walker has certainly brought a different mentality than his past three predecessors to this struggling Red Raider program.

His up beat attitude and goals of improving from game to game have brought stability to a program, which has been anything but stability the past three seasons.

For the sake of the program, Texas Tech should hire Chris Walker as Head Coach after the season ends in March.

If Texas Tech wants to improve the Men’s Basketball program, they need to keep Chris Walker.

There is great potential for the Red Raiders under Walker if they retain him as Head Coach. What do they have to lose if he doesn’t succeed at a program that hit rock bottom last season?

The Red Raiders are off for a week until they host new Big 12 Conference member West Virginia at the United Spirit Arena on February 2nd at 12:45pm.
