Sam, the first openly-gay player in the NFL, was signed by the Cowboys back on September 3rd after being release by St. Louis.  The Rams drafted Sam late in the seventh round of the NFL draft in May.  The former SEC defensive player of the year out of the University of Missouri was the 249th pick out of 256 in this year’s draft.

Last week, head coach Jason Garrett was asked about Sam’s progress.

“Comes to work every day and practices hard,” Garrett said last Thursday.  “One of 10 practice roster guys that we have, so he’s working on his skills, trying to develop, but also doing a lot of other things.  Playing offense, defense, playing the kicking game, that’s what a lot of those guys do.”

The move opens a spot for linebacker Troy Davis, a second-year pro from Central Florida who worked out with the team on Monday.

Dallas has also re-signed seventh-round pick Ken Bishop to the practice squad.  Bishop was cut from the 53-man roster on Saturday to make room for linebacker Keith Smith.
