Texas Tech Football held their first practice yesterday in sweltering heat at the Red Raiders practice field in Lubbock. The emphasis for the coaching staff will be to change the mentality of defense.

Head Coach Tommy Tuberville spoke of the porous defense the past two seasons saying,

"As poor as we have been the last two years defensively the players want to create something here at Tech about defense. It has been a lost art here for many years...these seniors have had enough of it."

Don Williams of RedRaiders.com and The Williams and Hyatt Show heard on 1340 The Fan wrote today on Freshman receiver Derreck Edwards challenging for the No. 2 slot at split end and changing his name.

From the story,

"Growing up through high school and junior high, they told me it was ‘D-e-r-e-k’,” Edwards said. “I ended up looking on my birth certificate, and it was ‘D-e-r-r-e-c-k,’ so I’ve tried to adopt that name more because it is on my driver’s license and everything else. It’s a total mixup.”

Edwards’ discovery didn’t happen just recently. He’s actually known the correct spelling since his junior year in high school, but liked the original “Derek” and was content to let it slide for a while.

“I didn’t know anything about the two ‘r’s and the ‘c’ until I was about 17 years old,” Edwards said. “On my report cards, on my ID cards, all that kind of stuff, it was ‘D-e-r-e-k.’ ... My mom told me the story, and I had to adopt the extra ‘r’ and the ‘c.’”

Let's hope Edwards continues to excel in practice and confuse defenses as fans might be confused on who he is with the new spelling of his name.
