Detroit ace Justin Verlander overcame a shaky start to help the Tigers to a 5-4 victory over the New York Yankess in their best of five ALDS match up. The Tigers now lead the series 2-1 thanks to Verlander's stellar pitching and clutch performances from Ramon Santiago and Delmon Young.

Verlander overcame a two run first inning to shut down the Yankees in impressive fashion. Verlander threw eight solid innings with 11 strike outs and only three walks. Verlander did allow four runs total in his performance. Jose Valverde recorded his first save in the postseason for the Tigers.

Verlander didn't win it himself though; he had some offensive help in Santiago and Young. Santiago drove in Brandon Inge on two separate occasions while Young supplied the go ahead run thanks to a 7th inning solo shot.

The Tigers will now take their 2-1 series lead into game four today from Comerica Park in Detroit. Taking the mound for the Tigers will be Rick Porcello. The Yankees will send out A.J. Burnett. First pitch is set for 7:37 CT.
