Documents Show Violations Under Billy Gillispie
New documents have surfaced about the NCAA violations under former Texas Tech Basketball Coach Billy Gillispie. KAMC-28 in Lubbock received the documents after an Open Records Request and it details the violations the University reported to the NCAA in January of 2012.
Texas Tech self-reported the violations stem from practices that took place on October 29, 2011 and October 30. The practice on 10/29 lasted seven hours and fifteen minutes and the 10/30 practice was six hours and thirty minutes long.
Listed in the violation are Gillispie and Assistant Coach Bubba Jennings as being present for the practices. The documents in turn state that Jennings was to monitor practice times, but Jennings did not were a watch to properly document the length of practice.
Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt sent a letter to Gillispie about the violations making it clear that the University would not tolerate the violations.
Hocutt said, “Your conduct and lack of oversight as the head coach that resulted in these violations is simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
Gillispie resigned from Texas Tech on September 19th and Associate Head Coach Chris Walker was named interim Head Coach October 4th for the season and a national search would take place for a permanent head coach after the season.
