‘Expendables 3′ Going After Four Action Icons?

Warner Bros./Lionsgate/Universal

Though ‘The Expendables 3′ isn’t a given yet, virtually every action star from our collective youth shows up in ‘The Expendables 2.’ Planet Hollywood partners Stallone, Willis and Schwarzenegger are present. Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme get in on the fun this time around. They join contemporary butt-kickers Jet Li and Jason Statham. If they were to move ahead with ‘The Expendables 3′ we have a short list of action icons we’d hope to see on screen alongside this cavalcade of macho talent – and from what we hear, four such grizzled veterans might be ready for their glorified cameos.

IGN quotes producer Avi Lerner as saying that Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Wesley Snipes and Nicolas Cage are on the radar for a third ‘Expendables’ movie. He goes so far as to say that they’ve “got” Cage, and that there’s a character written with Eastwood in mind. The rest is talk, though … especially when you consider that Snipes is in federal prison on a three-year sentence for tax evasion.

Maybe the third ‘Expendables’ movie can involve Stallone’s crew breaking Snipes out of jail?

Whom else might be on the hook for this over-packed sequel?

We’re going to bring Mickey Rourke back, if he won’t be too crazy. I like Mickey. And of course, all the existing stars [will return].

And somewhere, Steve Seagal checks his phone to make sure it’s still getting a dial tone.

Actually, there’s one more name I’d like to see on this list. Mel Gibson. He’s an action icon. He could use a PR boost. And he’d out-crazy even Rourke. Sign the ‘Lethal Weapon,’ and a third ‘Expendables’ could be the biggest action movie the world will ever see. ‘The Expendables 2’ will be in theaters this Friday.
