Another school which is joining the Big East in 2012, Boise State is facing too many bumps in the road of moving its non-football sports to the Western Athletic Conference for the 2012-2013 seasons will stay in the Mountain West for the next athletic year.

Boise State and San Diego State will be joining the Big East in football only starting in 2013 with Boise joining the WAC and SDSU joining the Big West Conference in non-football sports. BYU left in 2011 along with TCU bolting to the Big 12 after this season.

MARANA, Arizona (AP) — Tiger Woods had to go the distance to get to the second round of the Match Play Championship.

Woods took too many journeys through the desert and was trailing Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano until he drove the 15th green for a birdie to square the match, then took advantage of the Spaniard’s struggles with the putter.

It was the fourth time Woods was taken to the 18th hole in the opening round of this fickle event. He next plays Nick Watney, who had no trouble beating British Open champion Darren Clarke.

The top seeds teed off late, with top-ranked Luke Donald trailing Ernie Els at the turn.

Dustin Johnson made the greatest escape, beating Jim Furyk in 20 holes. Ryo Ishikawa also rallied late to beat Riviera winner Bill Haas.

With back to back American League pennants, the 2010 American League MVP, and the most excitement to ever hit the Texas Rangers organization some might think expectations would naturally be reserved. However, Rangers President and co-owner Nolan Ryan doesn’t think that way.

In a Wednesday news conference at Spring Training in Surprise, AZ told reporters his team that is being assembled for the 2012 season is the best he has offered to Ranger fans in his tenure as President. Ryan addressed the addition of Japanese pitching sensation Yu Darvish, the youth of the starting pitching rotation and Hamilton’s relapse earlier in the month.

The Rangers signed Darvish to a six-year, $56 million contract after paying his Japanese team $51 million just to have the chance to acquire his services after All-Star CJ Wilson bolted to the Los Angeles Angels for $77 million.

The Texas Rangers have hired former All-Star shortstop Tony Fernandez as a special assistant to general manager Jon Daniels.

Fernandez went to five All-Star games and won four straight Gold Gloves (1986-1989) with Toronto, where he spent most of his 17-year big league career that ended in 2001. He reached the playoffs with five different teams and won a World Series with the Blue Jays in 1993.

“We’re excited to welcome Tony to our organization,” Daniels said in a statement. “His work ethic and performance on the field are matched only by his grace and commitment to the community. He’ll be able to help our players in a number of ways.”

The 49-year-old Fernandez was a career .288 hitter and had a .327 batting average in 43 postseason games.  He played in a total of 2,158 Major League Games, collecting 2,276 hits and finished with a career average of .288. His .979 career fielding percentage as a shortstop ranks sixth all-time among players with at least 1,000 games.

Since he retired, Fernandez has earned several degrees in ministry school and is an ordained minister. He helps run the Tony Fernandez Foundation, a nonprofit with offices in Canada, the U.S. and his native Dominican Republic.

Meanwhile the Rangers completed a trade Tuesday with the Cleveland Indians. Texas acquired left-handed reliever Kelvin De La Cruz from the Indians for cash considerations and placed him on their 40-man roster. He was designated for assignment by the Indians last week.

De La Cruz, 23, has never pitched above Double A. He was 5-6 with a 4.19 ERA in 16 starts and seven relief appearances for Double-A Akron last season. He held left-handed hitters to a .143 batting average.

The Rangers now have 59 players in camp, including 32 pitchers. The primary candidates for left-handed relief are Joe Beimel, Mitch Stetter, Michael Kirkman, Ben Snyder, Martin Perez and Miguel de los Santos.

The Texas Tech Football team has a new defensive line coach after hiring Fred Tate to fill the position.

Tate replaces Terry Price who left the Red Raiders to return to his alma mater, Texas A&M. Tate’s familiar with new defensive coordinator Art Kaufman as the two were on staff together at Southern Miss.

“We are happy to welcome Fred Tate to our football family,” said head coach Tommy Tuberville. “Fred is an excellent coach and Art Kaufman really spoke high of him from their time together at Southern Miss. He will bring a lot of experience to our defensive unit and we are thrilled to have him.”

Tate has spent the past two seasons as the safeties coach at Marshall, and prior to his time with the Thundering Herd he spent time as the defensive line coach at both Tennessee-Chattanooga and Southern Miss.

Kansas had a 31-28 lead at halftime and lost that lead early on in the second half.

The Lady Raiders had a 5 point lead over Kansas with 8:30 minutes left in the game, but Kansas’ Natalie Knight made two consecutive 3-pointers that ended up tying the game at 56.  Kansas then went on a 16-6 run to seal up the win.

Angel Goodrich led Kansas with 20 points and Aishah Sutherland contributed 15 points.

The Lady Raiders record is now 17-10 (5-10) and their next game is Saturday at Texas A&M

The Lady Mustangs edged the Lady Plainsmen in every quarter but the 4^th offensively, outscoring Monterey by five in the 1^st, three in the 2^nd, and four in the 3^rd.

Coronado was led offensively by Suzzy Dimba who scored 18, Bailey Wipff dropped in 17 and Lauren Dudding added 13 of her own.

Monterey struggled offensively only having only two players go for double digits with Kellyn Schneider dropping in 16 while Bianca LaFargue added 12.

The 55-43 victory gave Coronado three straight victories over Monterey after falling to the Lady Plainsmen in the finals of the Caprock Holiday Classic.

The Fort Myers News-Press today is reporting on the latest story involving the Boston Red Sox new Spring Training home, jetBlue Park.

Apparently, a Chicago Cubs fan bought the domain name of jetBluePark.com. While, the cybersquatting of a domain name is nothing new, the Cubs fan decided to do something different with the domain name.

As of Tuesday afternoon, typing jetbluepark.com into a Web browser resulted in the New York Yankees homepage being unfurled onto the screen.

“It does?” said Sam Kennedy, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Boston Red Sox, when told Tuesday afternoon. Kennedy then watched as Red Sox senior advisor Charlie Steinberg typed jetbluepark.com onto his phone. “We’re going to have to look into that.”

For the Red Sox, losing a domain name to stadium you own is one thing, but having it point to your hated rivals website is a different matter.

So far, no word on if the Red Sox have contacted the fan who owns the domain, but the Fort Myers News-Press did.

So, how did Eric Engelman acquire jetBluePark.com?

The next day, Engelman said he opened his wife’s godaddy.com account and saw that jetbluepark.com, the domain name, was for sale.

Engelman bought it. He said he paid $8.

Can Red Sox get their hands on jetBluePark.com? Or will the Yankees be the beneficiary of a Cubs fan with nothing else better to do?

Texas Tech’s Sandy James has been tabbed the Big 12’s Softball Player of the Week following her performance last weekend at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Vegas.

James drove in nine runs for Texas Tech as the Red Raiders completed a perfect 6-0 weekend, defeating three teams, all of whom made an NCAA Regional Last Year.

The junior hit .409 over the six games, belting two big home runs to go with nine RBIs. She slugged .727 after totaling 16 bases off nine hits.

James nailed a three-run homer in the first inning against Portland State to break open the game for Tech. She also gave the Red Raiders some separation in the finale versus Utah State, hitting a 3-1 pitch over the fence to give Texas Tech a 4-1 lead at the time.

The Dallas-native is tied for the league lead with four homeruns, and is among the top in hits, RBI, slugging percentage and total bases.

James becomes the first Red Raider to be named Player of the Week twice in a career and only the second to earn multiple Big 12 weekly awards.

Pitcher of the Week Honors went to the Texas Longhorns Blaire Luna.

Tomorrow night, the Texas Tech Red Raider Basketball team will face off against Iowa State at 8 o’clock in Ames, Iowa.  The game will be televised on ESPNU. The Red Raiders are currently in last place in the Big 12 Conference with a 1-13 record.  Iowa State is in fourth place with a 9-5 conference record.

When the New York Yankees shipped A.J. Burnett to Pittsburgh last week they actually paid the Pirates $18 million of the $31 million left on his contract so they would agree to take the underachieving pitcher off of their hands.

If that wasn’t insult enough, the Yanks took a final jab at Burnett in this hysterically awkward press release announcing the trade:

Burnett, 35, was signed by the Yankees as a free agent on December 18, 2008, to a five-year contract. In his three seasons with the club he went 34-35 with a 4.79 ERA (584.0IP, 311ER) in 99 games (98 starts). His 58 wild pitches recorded during his three-year stint with the Yankees (2009-11) were the most for any Major League pitcher over a three-season span since Tony Cloninger threw 62 wild pitches from 1964 through 1966, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

He posted an 11-11 record with a 5.15 ERA (190.1IP, 109ER) in 33 appearances (32GS) with the Yankees in 2011, setting career-highs in home runs allowed (31) and tying a career-high in earned runs allowed, while ranking first with a franchise-record 25 wild pitches – the most by any Major League pitcher in a single season since the start of the 2000s and the fifth most since 1900.

Ouch. The press release is notable for two reasons- first, that it only lists what amounts to negative statistics — it doesn’t, for example, mention Burnett’s above average 174 strikeouts in 2011 or the World Series he helped the team win in 2009. What really makes one scratch their head is all the space spent dedicated to wild pitches, which isn’t typically a statistic pitchers are judged on.

Imagine if the Yankees find a taker for Alex Rodriguez’ bloated contract.  That press release will include mentions of Madonna, a cousin buying HGH and centaur paintings.

Dirk Nowitzki had 26 points to lead the Dallas Mavericks past the depleted Boston Celtics 89-73. Nowitzki’s 26 points moved him to number 20 on the all time NBA career scoring list. Nowitzki has 23,335 points over his 14 seasons in the league.

The Mavs had a solid performance against the Celtics, but there performance is lessened in value considering the players the Celtics were without. Rajon Rondo was suspended for two games for throwing a ball at an official, Kevin Garnett was out for personal reasons, Brandon Bass was injured.  the Celtics also lost starters Jermaine O’Neal  and Chris Wilcox in the third quarter.

The Mavs are starting to hit their stride. Despite the loss to the Knicks earlier this week, the Mavs are playing some of the best basketball in the league right now.

The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to terms on a $19.6 million, three-year deal with cornerback Stanford Routt on Monday.

The addition of Routt helps Kansas City be better prepared for the potential loss of fellow defensive-back Brandon Carr.

The deal includes a $4 million signing bonus and $6 million the first season. Routt is still owed $5 million next month from the Raiders, who released him after the first season of a $54.4 million, five-year deal. The $11 million Routt will make in 2012 puts him among the three highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL.

“We are excited that we were able to come to terms with Stanford,” general manager Scott Pioli said. “He is a talented player, and as we have said in the past, we are always looking to add competition at every position year-round. Stanford’s experience and level of play will make him a solid addition to our defense.”

Routt has appeared in 110 games, starting 53 of them, over seven season spent with Oakland. Over his career he’s recorded 201 stops along with 10 interceptions and 52 pass deflections. He had a career-high four interceptions last season while adding a team-best and career-high 15 passes defensed.

He also allowed eight touchdown passes, tied for the second-most in the NFL.
