The window for the Texas Tech Red Raiders to make the post season got a little smaller last night when the Red Raiders lost 7-5 to the Kansas State Wildcats.

The situation for the Red Raiders is a precarious one, if the Red Raiders win out, they make the Big 12 Championship. If the Red Raiders lose one more game, and Kansas, who won yesterday, wins out, the Red Raiders are out of any postseason play.

Essentially its a jumbled mess, and the only way that Texas Tech can insure any sort of post season play is to win out. Hopefully they can pull it off.

Duke von Schamann, the starter for the Red Raiders took the loss, falling to 6-4 on the season after giving up five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. The loss brings the Red Raiders to 28-25 on the season and 6-16 in Big 12 play.

Kila Ka’aihue had a tie-breaking single in the 10th inning, as the Oakland Athletics bounced back from a disputed call on squeeze play that cost them the lead to beat the Texas Rangers 5-4 Thursday afternoon.

Ka’aihue’s single off Mike Adams drove in Jonny Gomes, who finished the game with three hits. Josh Reddick’s 10^th homer of the year off Alexi Ogando made if four-all in the seventh.

Brian Fuentes recorded his third save.

Mitch Moreland homered twice for the Rangers.

Oakland fell behind 4-3 in the sixth when Craig Gentry scored from third on a squeeze bunt that Brandon McCarthy thought he caught. A’s manager Bob Melvin was ejected for arguing the call.

The Rangers had runners at first and third with one out in the ninth but couldn’t score.

Josh Hamilton was supposed to have the day off but came on as a pinch-hitter and stayed in the game in center field. He made the first out in the eighth and 10^th innings to end his 16-game hitting streak.

Starter Matt Harrison allowed eight hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three.

SMU athletic director Steve Orsini was fired Thursday, just four short weeks after he and the Mustangs hired Hall of Fame basketball coach Larry Brown to lead its men’s program.

The move was announced by SMU President R. Gerald Turner in a news release, and was effective immediately.

“After several discussions over the last few weeks, it became apparent to me that it was necessary to make this change,” Turner said. “While we both are committed to the support of our student-athletes and coaches, a unified effort is required for future progress in our athletics programs.”

A national search for Orsini’s replacement has already begun.

Orsini had served as SMU’s athletic director since 2006, and was given a contract extension through May 2015 in January 2011.

SMU is set to move from Conference USA to the Big East in July 2013.

On this week’s “Sit and Listen Thursday” on Sportsline, it was a mini-class reunion with several players the 1965 Texas Tech football team.

Steve Dale and Coach Rodney Allison spoke with 6 members of the ’65 TTU offensive team. In Hour 1, we had interviews from the “Golden Palomino” All-American Donny Anderson, quarterback Tom Wilson, and fullback Kenny Baker. In Hour 2, we heard from offensive lineman Phil Tucker, tight end Terry Scarborough and wide receiver Jerry Shipley. Under the leadership of Coach JT King, the Red Raiders of 1965 were 8-3 for the season, made an appearance in the Gator Bowl and and finished second overall in the Southwest Conference. The players all shared their memories from that eventful year, including the famous “hook and ladder” play against A&M.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders are looking to continue their season by making it into the post season. For Texas Tech, the path is clear, beat Kansas State, and your guaranteed a spot in the Big 12 Tournament. Lose, and their season is over. Win the Big 12 Tourney, and earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Kansas State is in a similar situation to Texas Tech. Lose the series, and their season most likely ends as well. It should be a great weekend of baseball as both teams have everything on the line.

Texas Tech has been off for the last week for finals, and are hoping to avoid a layoff against the Wildcats. Texas Tech is currently 28-24 on the season, and 6-15 in Big 12 play. Texas Tech won 5 of their last seven games, but have a long way to go if they hope to make any sort of post season play.

With people starting to wonder about Dan Spencer, and his future of being the Red Raider baseball coach, a series win this weekend would be huge in cementing his position.

Rangers fans have taken things to a new level. Ron Washington, the Texas Rangers manager who is widely credited with bringing the Rangers to new heights of success on the field now has a puppet.

The video, frankly, is just odd. Understandably, most true Rangers fans, who haven’t come around in the last couple of years, have been begging for success, and now that they finally have it, they aren’t quite sure how to handle it. That, at least we can hope, is the reason we saw this pop up at a recent Rangers game. Check out the video below.

In actual baseball news, the Rangers took down the Oakland Athletics last night 4-1. Yu Darvish pitched 7 2/3 innings giving up 1 run, and striking out 7. Adrian Beltre belted a two run homer for the Rangers. Craig Gentry and Elvis Andrus had RBI singles for the Rangers.

The Houston Astros offense took care of Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Randy Wolf en route to an 8-3 win at Minute Maid Park tonight. Astros starter Bud Norris struck out nine in seven innings for his third consecutive win.

Astros 1B Carlos Lee led the team offensively as he went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and hit a solo homer in the 7th inning. Jed Lowrie and Jordan Schafer each went 1 for  4 with an RBI.

The Astros jumped out to a 5-0 lead through 3 innings and extended their lead to 7-1 after 4 innings.

Wolf only pitched 4 innings for the Brewers, giving up 7 runs, 6 of them earned, on 7 hits and 3 walks.

The Lone Star Series, with the Silver Boot Trophy, has been in existence with the Astros and Rangers since 2001.  The Rangers have won 8 of the 11 season match-ups the Lone Star Series has been played.

So, we ask you, who will win the Lone Star Series this year?

The Frisco, Texas native helped Hutchinson Community College get all the way to the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship game this season, pushing the No. 2 Lady Dragons to a 36-1 overall record – its best season in the program’s 38-year history.

“I am delighted to be playing at Texas Tech next year,” Patterson said. “I’m thrilled with the new opportunity to be playing for coach Curry and her staff.”

Patterson, a 6-foot-1 sophomore forward, averaged 12.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game this season and was a two-time NJCAA Player of the Week, NJCAA National All-Tournament Team member and 2011-12 NJCAA First-Team All-American. She picked up Second Team All-America honors in 2010-11.

Patterson joins other Lady Raider 2012 signees Kellyn Schneider (Monterey HS/Lubbock, Texas), Ivonne Cook-Taylor (Terra Nova HS/Daly City, Calif.), Minta Spears (Bullard HS/Bullard, Texas), and Shunta Nevitt (Spring Dekaney HS/Houston, Texas).

Both schools are toward the bottom of the Big 12 Conference standings as Texas Tech sits at 7^th place with a 6-15 record while K-State is in last place with a 5-16 record. Tech owns a ½ game lead over 8^th place Kansas going into this weekend. Duke von Schamann takes the mound Thursday night for the Red Raiders in the series opener. Von Schamann is 6-3 this season with a 1.71 ERA.

Texas Tech is in need of a series victory this weekend to make the Big 12 Tournament. Tech is currently in 7th place in the Big 12 with a 1/2 game lead over the Kansas Jayhawks and a 1 game lead over last place Kansas State.

Women’s boxing will make its debut at this summer’s Olympic Games in London, and the US now has its first official team member: 22-year-old Marlen Esparza of Houston, Texas, who secured the spot after beating the snot out of another chick at the women’s world boxing championships in China earlier this week.

Defying the stereotype that lady boxers have the heft of a pallet of bricks, Esparza is a badass of the tiniest proportions — she fell into the featherweight class, which mandates fighters not weigh more than 112 pounds.

Two other American women, Quanitta Underwood and Claressa Shields, were defeated in bouts at the Chinese tournament but may still make the US team if an international commission selects them.

Underwood, 28, is in the 132-pound lightweight category and one of America’s best-known amateur boxers. Since she says she suffered years of sexual abuse at the hands of her father, we’re guessing she honed her skills that way (and hopefully put him in the hospital at least once). Shields is only 17 but quickly gained cred when she bested better-known fighters at the United States Olympic trials earlier this year.

Hopefully, women’s wrestling is the next sport to get Olympic recognition. We’ve been holding tryouts at our house for years.

Apparently, things fell apart late in the second period after Cody Reed of the Coquitlam Adanacs was hit by  Jordan Kuziuk of the Nanaimo Timbermen, who was then cross-checked by the Adanacs’ Zachary Hartman. After that, all the players on the field began to tussle. Eventually, both benches emptied and a full-scale fracas erupted. No fewer than 15 players were suspended.

What’s even more startling about this clip is the utter lack of spectators. With the exception of a few fans who shout their disapproval after the fight, the stands are largely empty. Granted, Canada is almost entirely fixated on hockey as the national sport, but this lack of turnout is embarrassing.

Oh well, at least we have this battle royal to remind us that lacrosse exists.

With Nelson Cruz and Elvis Andrus out of the lineup, the Texas Rangers struggled to find defensive consistency on their way to a 7-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals.  Colby Lewis gave up eight hits on the night, and allowed five unearned runs.

On Lewis’ performance, Rangers manager Ron Washington noted that, “He’s had those plays before and executed. He didn’t execute it. That one just got away from him.”

Brandon Snyder picked up some slack for the Rangers, smacking a homer in the ninth inning, but it was not enough to get any momentum going for the Rangers. For the Rangers fans out there, its not time to enter panic mode yet. The Rangers are 4 games up on the Oakland Athletics, and well as being 7 1/2 up on both Seattle and Los Angeles. If Hamilton can remain consistent and healthy they should have no problem taking their division.

The Texas Tech Red Raider baseball team struggled on the field at times, but absolutely excelled in the class room. The Red Raiders had 11 players named to the Big 12 All Academic Team, including seven on the first team.

According to Texas Tech’s official website, Bo Altobelli, Scott LeJeune, Jordan Lopez, David Paiz, Reid Redman, Rusty Shellhorn, and Brennan Stewart were all named to Big 12 All Academic First Team. Shellhorn in fact was one of the three players in the Big 12 who posted a perfect 4.0.

The amount of players selected to the academic teams reflect well on head coach Dan Spencer. Since he has arrived four years, the Red Raiders have had 18 players named to the first team all Big 12 Academic Team.

Congrats to the Red Raiders who made the team.
