A grand jury indicted former candidate for Lubbock ISD School Board Amanda Lee Banks Tuesday afternoon (May 15) for insurance fraud.

Banks was arrested on May 1st in a case that occurred in August 2016. KAMC News reports Banks reported a burglary in the 2700 block of 87th Street where police say racial slurs were carved into furniture and a vehicle.

A detective described the burglary as unusual because the intruder vandalized the home more than stole possessions, as well as other inconsistent factors.

Police discovered that Banks had filed 21 insurance claims since 2008 and believe that she carved the slurs inside the home to bolster fake insurance claims. Police say they can prove nearly $8,000 in fraudulent insurance claims.

If convicted, Banks faces a maximum of 2 years in prison.
