NBC 5 in Dallas/Fort Worth is reporting today that former Dallas Cowboys special teams coach Joe Avezzano has passed away at the age of 68.

Avezzano joined the Dallas Cowboys in 1990 as an assistant for Jimmy Johnson and left the team after the 2002 season. He became a stabilizing influence on the Cowboys coaching staff as he stayed throughout the head coaching changes in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

His last NFL job was as an assistant for the Oakland Raiders from 2003-2005.

Avezzano remains the only person to be a three-time winner of the NFL’s Special Teams Coach of the Year award.
