FOX May Offer Suspended Head Coach Sean Payton Analyst Position

New Orleans Saints (suspended) head coach Sean Payton may be out for the 2012 season, but if you watch FOX football, you might still be hearing from him.

FOX Sports is reportedly interested in offering Payton a position as an NFL analyst. According to the story, ESPN, NBC and CBS had no interest in hiring the embattled head coach, who was suspended for the season for his involvement in the NFL “Bountygate” scandal. FOX Sports, on the other hand, seem to be very open to the possibility of taking Payton on as an analyst.

“Our feeling about Sean is that he’s bright, articulate and obviously contemporary,” said Lou D’Ermilio, FOX’s senior vice president for communications. “Any network with NFL rights would have to consider it.”

Although Payton is barred from any involvement with coaching the Saints for one year, the NFL said he was not prohibited from working on NFL broadcasts. “He is suspended from the NFL for the season,” the league said in a statement to The Times. “His involvement in any non-NFL employment or business matters is not our decision.”

So this guy gets suspended because he and some others allegedly ordered his players to physically harm other players, and then he gets a cushy job as an analyst for a major sports broadcaster? Something about this seems kind of unfair, doesn’t it? Now granted, there’s no word yet on whether FOX will make an actual offer to Payton, or if Payton would even accept said offer. But it’d be a bad move on FOX’s part to take a coach with such a negative view from the public.
