Freshman shortstop Orlando Garcia made sure the incredible effort of the Texas Tech pitching staff was not wasted as he crushed a one-out 12th inning line-drive shot that glanced off the left-field fair pole, lifting the No.23 Tech baseball to a 3-2 Big 12 Conference win over the Baylor Bears at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Saturday.

The Red Raiders (21-14, 6-5) received six strong innings from starting pitcher Cameron Smith. Smith allowed two, first-inning, runs, both earned, on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Smith allowed two or fewer earned runs inhis third consecutive start.

Senior reliever Corey Taylor was dominant over the next 5.1 innings not allowing a run on three hits and three strikeouts while hitting one Baylor batter. Taylor lowered his national-best ERA to 0.20.

Taylor’s fellow senior bullpen mate Dominic Moreno (2-3) recorded two strike outs in his .2 innings of work to pick up the win. It was the seventh time Moreno  did not allow a run.

The Red Raiders tied the game,2-2, with a two-run homer from junior designated hitter Quinn Carpenter in the second inning. It was Carpenter's third home run of his first season with the Red Raiders.

It was the last runs either team would score until Garcia’s extra-inning heroics.

Both teams combined stranded 25 base runners (BU-9, TTU-16) as neither team scored from the third to 11th inning.

Tyler Neslony went 2-for-5 at the plate notching his fourth straight multi-hit game, extending his hitting streak to seven games and marking 16 consecutive in which he has reached base safely.

Junior 1B Eric Gutierez has a nine-game hit streak and has reached base safely in 12 straight games.

Baylor starter Drew Tolson took a no decision going 5.2 innings allowing two runs on seven hits with three walks allowed.

Brad Kuntz came on in relief and worked 2.1 innings but did not allow a run despite giving up four bases-on-balls and one hit.

Troy Montemayor (0-3) came on to start the ninth inning and delivered 3.1 scoreless innings until the 2-1 pitch to Garcia that ended the game. The Garcia home run was the only hit Montemayor allowed. He walked two batters and struck out three.

Garcia’s home run, the first of his career, was Tech's first walk-off home run since 2008 and the program's first walk-off homer in extra-innings since 2002.

The Red Raiders are now 50-34-3 all-time in extra-inning contests, including a 3-1 record in extra innings this season. Three of the four extra-inning games have gone 12 or more innings

Baylor dropped to 13-21 overall and to 4-7 in Big 12 play this season.

Tech and Baylor will conclude their Big 12 series on Sunday with first pitch set for 2:07 p.m. at Rip Griffin Park.

Tech sophomore left-handed pitcher Dylan Dusek will make his fifth start of the season against the Bears.

The game will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest Plus.
