Houston Astros starting pitcher Jordan Lyles battled through two rough innings and a 4-run fifth inning propelled the Astros to a 5-3 win over the San Diego Padres Tuesday night.

Lyles’ troubles started in the second inning when an error and two consecutive singles loaded the bases with one out.  Lyles got Logan Forsythe to pop out and then opposing starting pitcher Kip Wells to ground out to end the inning.

The Padres third inning, offensively, started out with Will Venable hitting a deep fly ball to right center that was initially ruled in play. Venable got to third with a triple, but was then allowed to trot home after umpires ruled the hit a home run. The Padres then loaded the bases again with two singles and a walk. With two outs, Lyles buckled down again and got Alexi Amarista to ground out on a 2-1 count and escape the inning with only giving up one run.

The Astros tied the game at 1 in the third with a Jed Lowrie solo home run.  The Astros then took the lead in the fifth with a 4-run inning.  A Kip Wells wild pitch scored Jed Lowrie.  Then Chris Johnson drove in Brian Bogusevic with a single to left.  The scoring concluded with a 2-run homer from J.D. Martinez.

The Padres added two runs in the top of the ninth off of reliever David Carpenter. Astros closer Brett Myers came in for final two outs of the game to shut the door, and to earn the save. Lyles earned the win with his 6 1/3 innings pitched and Kip Wells took the loss.
