The Houston Astros have signed veteran first baseman Carlos Pena to a one-year, $2.9 million deal. He can earn an additional $1.4 million in performance bonuses.

The 34-year-old Pena spent last season with Tampa Bay hitting .197 with 19 home runs and 61 RBIs in 160 games.

The left-handed hitter has hit 277 home runs and driven in 791 runs in parts of 12 seasons with the Rangers, A's, Tigers, Red Sox, Cubs and Rays.

Pena is expected to play first base and see action as the team's designated hitter as the Astros make the shift to the American League next season.
