Houston Astros Tab Bo Porter Next Skipper
The Houston Astros have tabbed Washington Nationals third-base coach Bo Porter as the team’s next manager.
Houston will be making the move to the American League West next season.
Porter, a Houston resident, is in his second season as the third-base coach for the Nationals. He will remain with Washington until the end of the postseason.
“We are thrilled to be announcing that Bo Porter is going to be our next manager,” Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said. “He has a tremendous amount of experience and has worked under some great managers … He’s seen different styles, he’s worked under different managers and he’s learned a lot from them.”
Prior to joining the Nationals, Porter was the third-base coach for the D-backs for one season, and later served as bench coach in Arizona under Kirk Gibson.
Porter played three season in the Majors with the Cub’s, A’s and Rangers from 1999-2001 before beginning his coaching career in 2005 as the hitting coach for Class A Greensboro.
“We went through a very, very thorough process, interviewed a lot of candidates,” Astros owner Jim Crane said. “We’re very excited about Bo’s energy, his sense of energy and unique skill set. You can look at his resume, it’s very impressive.”
