The Texas Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has opened an investigation into a potential identity theft ring after dozens of state residents have reported calls from an agency posing as the Attorney General’s Office demanding payment and personal information.

Victims report receiving calls from phishers presenting themselves as members of the OAG demanding overdue payments for a variety of things, especially child support.

The phisher informs the potential victim that a warrant has been issued for their arrest that can only be called through immediate payment. Victims also report the callers asking for Social Security numbers and other personal information. Once obtaining that data, the phisher demands payment through pre-paid debit cards.

Anyone receiving calls demanding payment should hang-up the phone immediately and call the official number of the institution demanding payment to confirm the nature of the call. Most institutions from banks and utilities, to state agencies will never call demanding immediate payment over the phone.

If you believe you have been a victim of identity theft, go online to file a complaint with the OAG. To find out more about protecting yourself from identity theft, visit the OAG’s website to receive a copy of their identity theft protection kit.
