A Texas Tech Athlete has been named the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the year, the first time someone from the university has received the award.

TTU Senior Jaelene Hinkle was recognized on Thursday, December 11, for maintaining a 3.81 grade-point average in the College of Human Sciences for the past four years of her school career.

The award was created and first handed out during the 2012-2013 academic year and is awarded to a student athlete based on a vote from the Big 12’s head coaches.

Hinkle is part of the Red Raider Soccer team which advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship tournament this season.

This year, Hinkle was also named as a first team Academic All-American and was also named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team for a third consecutive season.

Hinkle will take part in her commencement ceremony from Tech’s College of Human Sciences this December.
