I'm from exactly the right generation to be extremely excited that TV star LeVar Burton will be speaking in my hometown and at the university I attended.

As a little kid, "Reading Rainbow" was one of my very favorite televisions shows (it was tied for first with "Gem and the Holograms"). And as a not-very-much-older kid, I loved him as Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge in "Star Trek: The Next Generation." (Yes, I did just type out his whole proper title.)

Here are the details from the Texas Tech University press release:

LeVar Burton, television personality and producer, will deliver his lecture, “The Value of Diversity,” for the 2017 African-American History Month Lecture Series.

The series is sponsored by the Texas Tech University Office of the President, the Office of the Provost, and the Division of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement. Burton’s Lecture is co-sponsored by the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts.

The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited. Tickets can be picked up in Doak Hall, Room 101 prior to the lecture on a first-come, first serve basis. Any unclaimed seats on the day of the lecture will be made available to others at 6:45 p.m.

WHEN:           7 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 7)

WHERE:         Student Union Building, Allen Theatre

I'm very excited to hear from the man that taught me the joys of reading, of inquiry, of kindness and of friendship.
