Lubbock Christian University Rally Falls Short at Wayland Baptist

Miguel Pagan’s RBI single through the right side of a drawn in Lubbock Christian infield gave Wayland Baptist a wild 9-8 victory on Monday evening at Wilder Field.

Just like they did last week in Lubbock, the #11 Chaps erased a big Pioneer lead late in the game, but this time Wayland had the last at bat and came through with the win.

Senior shortstop Eddie Allen led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to right, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ben Christian attempted to sacrifice Allen to third, but the bunt was popped up and Allen was unable to advance. Christian reached first safely however when the Chaparral defense dropped the ball.

That brought up Pagan with runners on first and second and no outs. The junior from Puerto Rico squared around to bunt, but instead chopped the first pitch over the leaping first baseman’s glove. The ball rolled into the outfield grass, allowing the speedy Allen to score easily from second base.

The late inning heroics by both teams took away a much-deserved win from WBU starting pitcher Marcus Limon. The senior, working on three days rest, held the NAIA’s highest scoring team to just two runs, one earned, in six innings of work. Limon also took over as the all-time strikeout leader at Wayland, surpassing Todd Jeffress’ mark of 333 set from 2005 through 2009. The Estacado High graduate picked up 11 K’s against the Chaps, and has now accumulated 336 during his three years on the mound at WBU.

The Pioneers plated eight runs in the third to give Limon an 8-2 lead. Nic Shadle and Oscar Rivera started the inning with consecutive infield hits. Allen followed with a run-scoring double, and then Christian brought home two more with a single to the gap in left center.

Two batters later, Aldo Mendez picked up a RBI on another infield single. After a fielder’s choice and a walk loaded the bases, Shadle came up again and lifted the 1-0 pitch into the jetstream for his fourth home run of the season.

Limon took care of business from there, holding the visiting Chaps scoreless over the next three innings. He was pulled after giving up a lead-off base hit and a walk to open the seventh.

Gabe Sandersius escaped the seventh and eighth without any damage, but things fell apart in the ninth as LCU scored six times on three hits, two walks and two WBU errors. The final Chaparral hit was a three-run blast by Karl Seiter that tied the score at eight.

Kevin Burbank, who relieved Sandersius, got the win to even up his season record at 4-4. As a team, the Pioneers, winners of four straight and in sixth place in the conference standings, are now 26-25 on the year and 12-15 against SAC opponents. They finish up the regular season on the road this weekend against Oklahoma Baptist University. The #6 Bison, 35-11 overall, are currently sitting in second place in the SAC standings at 19-7, just a half game in front of #20 Rogers State who is 19-8.

The Chaps (38-11, 18-9) are in fourth place in the league. They also conclude the season on the road in Shawnee, Okla. where they will take on eleventh place St. Gregory’s University.
