New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on early Friday evening that the New York City Marathon scheduled for this Sunday will be cancelled.

The statement from the embattled New York Mayor comes after criticism emerged after he staunchly defended the marathon going on as scheduled. The media tents at the marathon were given electric generators which could be used in other areas of the city still without power.

The death toll from Hurricane Sandy in New York City stands at 40 with many citizens angry at the idea of police being diverted away from damaged areas of the city to protect the marathon.
