Former Texas Tech defensive back and track runner Nigel Bethel has announced his intent to transfer via Twitter.

On the surface, Texas Tech loses arguably its best cover corner, but there seems to be deeper currents running in this story.

I'm not connected enough to know what exactly happened, but I do know these things:

  • Bethel was suspended his freshman season for the first four games.
  • Bethel was mysteriously sidelined for the first several games of his sophomore season before he went on to have 12 pass break-ups and one interception.
  • Bethel did not participate in spring football.

I wish Nigel Bethel the best and hope he transfers somewhere he can use the two years of eligibility he has left.

With a light 2016 recruiting class in the defensive backfield, there will be serious depth issues on the heels of Bethel transferring.

It's your time to shine, David Gibbs. Make a miracle happen, alright?
