Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes has decided not to swing a bat this season on the Red Raiders baseball team.

Instead, the multi-sport athlete will focus on football this year.

"Moving forward, after speaking with my family following the bowl game, I feel it is in my best interest to concentrate solely on football and academics this spring," said Mahomes. "I know great things await the baseball program this season and I will be rooting them on every chance I get."

Mahomes thanked Texas Tech baseball Head Coach Tim Tadlock for the opportunity to play on his team.

"I am extremely grateful for the great opportunity that Coach Tadlock and his staff provided me. Not many college athletes have the privilege to play multiple sports at this level, so I’d like to thank Coach Tadlock, his staff as well as my teammates on the baseball team for allowing me that opportunity."

Mahomes is expected to again be Texas Tech's starting quarterback in 2016, leading a team with plenty of new faces, both on the coaching staff and on the field.

Texas Tech's 2016 baseball season begins Friday, Feb. 19 in Lubbock against Milwaukee.
