The Red Raider baseball team had its eight-game midweek winning streak snapped today with an 8 to 4 loss against New Mexico from Dan Law Field.

The loss dropped the Red Raiders to 25 and 19 overall on the season while the Lobos improved to 13 and 29.

Texas Tech starting pitcher Jamen Parten took the loss allowing five runs, six hits and two walks in 2.1 innings of work. New Mexico reliever Sam Wilson was credited with the win pitching three innings out of the bullpen with four strikeouts and allowing just two hits and one run.

Lobos starting pitcher Bobby Mares left the game with a no-hitter intact, but issued five walks and threw 59 pitches in four innings which led to his departure.

The Lobos scored two runs in the first and three runs in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead. The Red Raiders scored on a passed ball in the first.

Seven Texas Tech batters reached base via walk or hit-by-pitch before shortstop Kelby Tomlinson broke up New Mexico’s no-hitter with a single to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning with one out. The Red Raiders scored two runs in the fifth inning, one off McGruder’s bases-loaded walk and the other from David Paiz’ sacrifice fly to cut the Lobos lead to 5-3.

The pivotal moment of the game came in the sixth inning when the Red Raiders cut New Mexico’s lead to just a single run, 5-4, after a bases-loaded walk to Reid Redman which kept the bases full of Red Raiders for McGruder with two outs.

McGruder lined a 1-1 pitch up the middle to the shortstop whose diving snag prevented a single which would have scored a pair of runs giving Tech its first lead of the game. Instead the inning ended and the Lobos held onto their 5-4 lead.

New Mexico scored three insurance runs in the seventh inning on two base hits while Texas Tech committed a pair of errors in the inning.

The Red Raiders had their chances to rally in the late innings with runners at first and third with one out in the eighth, but back-to-back strikeouts by McGruder and David Paiz ended the inning. First baseman Stephen Hagen reached base with a two-out walk in the ninth inning before freshman catcher Mason Randolph ended the game with a fly out to left field. Tech finished the game leaving 13 runners on base.

The Red Raiders return to Big 12 play this weekend by hosting Kansas for a three-game series at Dan Law Field, beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.
