Texas Tech’s 15th ranked men’s golf team wrapped up day one of the NCAA Tucson Regional Wednesday at 1-under par and in sixth place overall, just five strokes behind tournament leader San Diego State who finished their day at 6 under par.

The Red Raider shot a first-round team total of 283 and are just two strokes behind fellow Big 12 competitor Texas A&M and Arizona who are tied for fourth at 3-under 281. The University of Washington checked in at second place at 5-under 279, while Liberty finished the afternoon just one stroke behind Washington in third place with a 4-under 280. The top five teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Oklahoma May 31st through June 5th.

Senior Nils Floren set the tone for the Red Raiders in the first round as he fired a 4-under 67 and currently sits in a three-way tie for third place individually. Senior Matt Smith also had a strong first day and is currently in a tie for 18 at even par. Teammates Fin Ewing logged a 1-over 72 and is tied for 30th while Chandler Rusk shot 2-over and is tied for 38th. Tyler Weworski finished the day at 3-over 74 and is tied for 49th.

The Red Raiders will return to action in the second round of play Friday morning with a 9:30 tee-off time.
