The Texas Tech Red Raider softball team got off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2011 by sweeping the host team New Mexico State ,5-3, and Montana, 8-5, in day one of the Hotel Encanto Classic tournament Thursday.

"I thought we showed some maturity today. Neither win was pretty but we will take them. We played with grit in the first game and played with some guts in the second game to pull it out so I'm proud of our group," said Red Raider Head Coach Adrian Gregory.

Sophomore Devon Thomey, who transferred from New Mexico State, led the Red Raiders on the day going 4-for-7 with six RBI.

In the first game of the day, Thomey broke open a 3-3 tie against the Aggies with a two-run double, before going 3-for-3, including a fourth inning home run, the first of her collegiate  career, to help defeat the Grizzlies.

Cara Custer (1-0) picked up the victory for the Red Raiders over New Mexico State  in the circle after allowing three runs, two of which that were earned, off five hits while striking out six. It was the 52nd victory of Custer's career, moving her past Ashly Jacobs (2007-10) into sole possession of second place in the Tech record book.

Chandler Moore picked up her first career win and Mattison Maisel quelled a potential Grizzly comeback in game two to pick up the first save of the season and her career.

The Red Raiders will look to continue their successful start Friday afternoon with a 12:30 p.m. CT first pitch against UTSA. Tech will face Colorado State later in the evening with a 7 p.m. CT start.
