Former Texas Ranger Justin Smoak hit a home run and Jason Vargas pitched 7 2/3 innings  as the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 3-1 on Thursday night.

The Mariners have won 7 of their last 9 games and now sit at 15-17 on the season while Texas drops their 8th game out their last 11 going into a 3 game home series with the New York Yankees.

Smoak was the main offering to Seattle in the trade that sent Cliff Lee to Texas last July, and has played well since returning from his time off for the death of his father.

Texas starting pitcher Colby Lewis (2-4) pitched a complete game giving up 3 runs on 8 hits while striking out 11.
