Should There Be More Punishment for Athletes Throwing an Event? — Sports Survey of the Day
The big news out of the Olympics right now isn’t about winning, but a few badminton teams who tried their best to lose. Eight badminton players competing in the London Games did something that goes against the moral sports code this week. They purposely threw matches in order to gain a more favorable seeding in the next round. The joke’s really on them, though, because they were all booted from Olympic play. That seems like the worst possible seeding you can get.
Not only were the eight players disqualified, but one Chinese player has decided to hang it up. Did she hang up her racquet and birdie willingly? That’s yet to be seen. Apparently the Asian countries take their badminton pretty seriously.
