Steven Gingery, Texas Tech Freshman pitcher, has been named Big 12 Newcomer of the week after seven shutout innings and a series clinching win on Saturday in Lawrence. The Red Raiders won 9-2 to clinch the 6th Big 12 series win of the season.

The Kansas Jayhawks had no answer for Gingery who posted four strikeouts and allowed just three hits on his way to his third win in Big 12 play. He only allowed one Jayhawk into scoring position before leaving the game with a 9-0 lead. Gingery, who matched the longest outing of his career, was the only Big 12 pitcher last week to toss at least seven shutout innings in a conference series.

Gingery has stymied Big 12 hitting all season with the conference only hitting .198 against the lefty, the second lowest in the Big 12. He's also notched a 1.67 ERA and 33 Ks in Big 12 play.

The Red Raiders close their eight-game road trip Tuesday night when Tech travels to face Abilene Christian. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Crutcher Scott Field in Abilene.
