Texas A&M Coach Mike Sherman, Missouri Coach Gary Pinkel & Baylor Coach Art Briles on the Longhorn Network at Big 12 Media Days

Read the direct quotes from Mike Sherman, Gary Pinkel and Art Briles regarding the Longhorn Network at Big 12 Media Days.

Q. A lot has been made about the Longhorn Network possibly airing high school football games, the impact that could have on high school and college recruiting. What impact do you think that would have if it were allowed?

COACH SHERMAN: I’ll be honest I’ve been asked that by Aggies on my coaching tour and my standard answer is I have enough on my plate getting our team ready to play. I’m sure people will watch that. We’ll have half a million Aggies watching it and we’ll have the Big 12 watching it and the advantage or disadvantage thereof.
But, truthfully, I’m just focusing on what I gotta do and with my job. And let’s win our first ballgame. So that’s where our focus is, and I’m sure you all can sort that one out yourselves.

Q. Gary, a lot of talk obviously about the Longhorn Network. I know it’s in the hands now of the ADs, presidents, the Big 12 office. But when you were first hearing about the plans for that network and all the things that they were doing about televising high school games, televising the second conference game on the network, what was your reaction when you first heard it?

COACH PINKEL: First of all, I have no control over that. It’s a lack of common sense there to think that the network, the university network can coach or have high school games on their network. To me there’s no common sense there.
So, anyway, I have enough trouble coaching football. I’ll leave that to some other people to make those decisions.

Q. You’ve already talked about Robert and the other guy, so I’m going to have to ask you about the Longhorn Network you were talking about recruiting a minute ago. Do you worry about the extra exposure that Texas is going to get because of 24 hours a day? Obviously it’s already tough recruiting against some teams, but talk about what that will do.
COACH BRILES: Maybe I’m different, I don’t know. To answer your question, do I worry about it, not a bit. I mean, they’re pretty hard to recruit against anyway, you know what I’m saying? They’ve done a great job for numerous years.
If you want to go back to ’68, (indiscernible) to Burleson who caught the spiral maybe. I’m not sure on my facts on that. Might have been ’69. So they’ve been good a while. They’ve done a great job for a while. Mack over the last 12 years, average 10 wins a year.
I mean, that’s fact. And when you get in the recruiting world, fact matters. They can do that, if there’s a need for it, people are going to pay for it, more power to them. Let them have it. If it helps the Big 12 if we have to recruit harder against Texas, we’ll do a better job, work harder and see if we can get a little better.

The Longhorn Network is scheduled to launch Aug. 26, a week before the Longhorns’ season opener against Rice that will be shown on the channel.
