You don't see them often, but you can hear their songs when they come out late July-August. This week's Texas Creepy Critter is the cicada.

There are literally over 1,300 different species of cicada around the world. The ones in North America are generally called "Dog Day" cicadas because they do emerge in the dog days of summer.

What's amazing is that they can live from 13-17 years!

Cicadas feed on sap. They do not bite or sting really, but may occasionally mistake a person's arm for a plant limb and attempt to feed on it.
