Texas Rangers television broadcaster Dave Barnett is taking a leave of absence that is expected to last the remainder of the season.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Barnett issued the following statement Monday through the team:

I want to thank everyone for your kind sentiments and words of encouragement over the last couple of weeks. It has meant a lot to me during what has been a very difficult time. Effective immediately, for health reasons I will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from my broadcasting duties that I expect to last for the remainder of the season.

I would ask that you please respect the privacy of me and my family during this time.

Thank you once again for your support.

Barnett last called a game for the Rangers on June 18, when he struggled with his speech during the late innings. He called the rest of the Padres game without incident as well as an appearance Fox Sports Southwest's postgame show.

He later blamed the incident on “severe migraines.”

Steve Busby will continue doing television play-by-play on Fox Sports Southwest and TXA21. Matt Hicks will continue to work with Eric Nadel on the Texas Rangers ESPN Radio Network.
