Jose Valverde closed out the Rangers in the ninth inning for his 29th save in as many chances this season.

Joaquin Benoit (3-3) blew a 5-2 lead in the top of the eighth, allowing a solo homer to Nelson Cruz and a tying two-run shot by Mike Napoli.

Texas and Detroit play tomorrow night in game two of the three game series at 6:05 from Comerica Park.
