Texas Tech CB Cornelius Douglas Named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

Texas Tech senior cornerback Cornelius Douglas was recognized by the league offices Monday, when he was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.

Douglas recorded three tackles, but it was his two interceptions that were key in the Red Raiders 24-13 win at Iowa State Saturday evening.  His second INT came with around 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter and was returned all the way down to the Cyclone 9-yard line, setting up the Red Raiders clinching score.

He is the sixth Red Raider to earn Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors and the first since Daniel Charbonnet in 2008, following Tech’s win over then-No.1 ranked Texas. Douglas is also the first Tech player with a pair of interceptions in a game since D.J. Johnson did so in last year’s Big 12 opener at Kansas.

Also receiving Big 12 recognition was West Virginia’s Geno Smith who was named the Offensive Player of the Week after passing for 656 yards and eight touchdowns in West Virginia’s 70-63 win over Baylor. The senior QB completed 45-of-51 passes with no interceptions.

The Longhorns DJ Monroe was named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week. With Texas and Oklahoma State tied at 14, Monroe fielded a kickoff in the end zone and broke two tackles to sprint 100 yards down the sideline for the score and give the Horns a 21-14 first quarter lead.
