The Texas Tech Red Raiders fell to the Iowa State Cyclones Saturday night 41-7, for Tech’s third straight home loss.

The Red Raiders were coming off the impressive 41-38 road win over Oklahoma that snapped the Sooners 39-game home winning streak, so a loss to an Iowa State team that entered the game winless in conference play with a redshirt freshman getting his first career start was nothing short of shocking.

Cyclone QB and Texas native Jared Barnett threw for a touchdown and ran for another to impress Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads.

“He’s what I’ve told you, he’s poised, he’s controlled, he’s composed,” Rhoads said. “I asked Tom Herman to get him some layups early and get his feet wet and we did that early with running the ball and a couple of throws and catches and from there confidence just built.”

Barnet rushed for 92 yards on 19 carries and completed 14 of 26 passes for 144 yards.

The Cyclones grabbed control of the game early in the first and really never pulled their foot off the gas.

Barnet first career touchdown came when he carried the ball on a 13-yard scamper for Iowa State’s first score of the night with 10:52 left in the first quarter.

Tech went 3-and-out on the next possession, punting the ball away for Ryan Erxleben’s first of nine on the night.

The Cyclones punched it in twice more in the first when RB Jeff Woody took it in from 3 yards out followed by a 2-yard pass from Barnett to Darius Darks with 2:20 left in the 1st to give Iowa State a 21-0 lead.

The Red Raiders lone score came in the 2nd quarter when Seth Doege tucked the ball and hurdled over an Iowa State defender to cut the score to 21-7.

Doege completed just 16 of 32 passed for a season-low 171 yards. He threw two interceptions and also lost a fumble. The Red Raiders had a streak of 69 games, dating back to a 12-3 loss to TCU in 2006, of at least one touchdown pass snapped.

Tommy Tuberville spoke after the loss about the possibility of there being a hangover from Oklahoma game.

“Well, I mean, you know they get patted on the back and talked about,” Tuberville said. “But we’re not going to blame it on that. You can’t take anything away from Iowa State. They came in and lost four in a row, and they were bound and determined to play much better.”

Iowa State kicked a 42-yard field goal the take a 24-7 lead into halftime, and from there the rout was officially on as Jones AT&T Stadium emptied during the half.

Duran Hollis broke free, and by free I mean untouched, for a 71-yard touchdown run to open the second half to move the score 31-7 in Iowa States favor. The Cyclones rolled up an impressive 368 rushing yards against the Red Raiders 105th-ranked rushing defense. Tech had been giving up an average of 205 yards per game coming into the contest.

It was Iowa State's first game with at least 300 yards rushing since 2001 when the Cyclones beat Kansas 49-7.

James White and Duran both went over 100-yards rushing on the game, while White and Jeff Woody both scored rushing touchdowns as well.

It was the second win over a ranked team in as many seasons for Iowa State as the Cyclones beat No. 22 Texas 28-21 last season.

It was also the second straight win over Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville for Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads, who was Tuberville's defensive coordinator at Auburn in 2008. The Cyclones beat the Red Raiders 52-38 last year in Ames.

Texas Tech will return to action next Saturday Nov. 5th with an 11 a.m. road test against the Texas Longhorns.
