The Red Raider Golf team finished their season Saturday in the Tucson Regionals after failing to make it to the top 5 and advance to the NCAA Championship.

Texas Tech started the last day of play just 6 strokes out of second place, at 1-under par, and a sure spot in the Championship, but shot poorly the entire day. The Red Raiders shot 7-over Saturday in the final round to cost them a spot in what would have been their third consecutive NCAA Championship. Tech ended the regional tied for 9th place at 6-over 858

The top performer for the Raiders was senior Nils Floren. Floren shot a 1-under on the final day of play after shooting a spectacular 4-under on Thursday and shooting par on Friday. Floren ended the tournament 4 strokes behind UC Davis' Matt Hansen who won the individual title at 9-under.

Up and comer Junior Tyler Weworksi had his best round on the final day of the tournament. Weworksi shot  1-under which helped him move up to 53rd overall.

Matt Smith, the other senior and leader of the team, ended his career at Tech on a sour note. Smith shot well during the first two days of the tournament and got himself tied for 19th place going into Saturday; Smith ended the tournament with a 2-over par performance and in a tie for 34th.

Golf Coach Greg Sands had this to say about his team's performance:

“Today was really tough. It’s a shame that Nils and Matt’s career has to end like this because they have been very special to our program.  We just couldn’t seem to do much right today and from the looks of the other regionals across the country, we aren’t alone in saying that.  I am really proud of this group and what they have done all year long.”

San Diego State won the tournament (19-under 833) followed by

Texas A&M (12-under 840)

California (9-under 843)

Pepperdine (8-under 844)

and Arizona (8-under 844)

The NCAA Championships will get started  in Stillwater, OK on Tuesday, May 31st and will wrap up Sunday, June 5th.
