Lubbock, TX (1340TheFan.com) — Another scrimmage is in the books for the Red Raider football team.  Head coach Tommy Tuberville seemed a little more happier with his squads play in 11-on-11 contact.

"We had some live tackling which I think was good for the first team," said Tuberville.  "We didn't make near as many mental mistakes before the ball was snapped like we did last week."

Seth Doege saw limited action, but did orchestrate a positive opening drive for the first team offense and found Javon Bell from about 25 yards out for a touchdown.  Bell has seen his reps increase with the first team as preseason camp progresses.

"Javon's played well, he's getting better," Tuberville said.  "He'll get a lot of playing time.  But that's not our problem.  Our problem is getting continuity between the running game and the passing game and getting everybody on sync."

Today's scrimmage gave the Tech coaching staff enough to think about as to who will start come gameday September 1st vs. Northwestern State.

"The great thing about this football team as compared to the ones we've had, we still don't know who's first team," Tuberville said.  "We got to make sure we get the right people on the field in certain situations which will take a lot of planning from the coaches starting next week."

Starting middle linebacker Will Smith was held out of today's scrimmage.  Tuberville says Smith strained his patella tendon and looks to be listed day-to-day.
