Saturday night, the Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-0, 0-0) passed their first major test of the season with a 35-24 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks (1-2, 0-0).

The Red Raider defense was able to contain the Razorbacks rushing attack and Patrick Mahomes accounted for three of the Red Raiders five touchdowns. Arkansas only scored three points in the second half, as the game was tied at 21 at halftime.

Mahomes finished the game 26/30 passing for 243 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He also rushed 10 times for 58 yards and two touchdowns.

Texas Tech jumped out to a 7-0 lead less than five minutes into the game after a three yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Reginald Davis.

Alex Collins ended up scoring his only touchdown of the game seven minutes later on a one yard rushing touchdown. That tied the game a 7 with 3:06 left in the first quarter.

Halfway through the second quarter, Texas Tech retook the lead with a trick play. Jakeem Grant took the ball on what became a halfback pass and found Reginald Davis wide open for a 72 yard touchdown reception.

The Razorbacks erased Tech's 21-14 a minute before halftime.  Brandon Allen connected with Drew Morgan on a 24 yard touchdown pass and that made the score 21-21 going in to halftime.

After receiving the second half kickoff, the Red Raiders put together one of their best drives of the game. Starting at their own 23, Mahomes immediately found Ian Sadler open for an 11 yard gain.  Three plays later, Mahomes connected with Cameron Batson on a 17 yard pass, moving the ball to the Arkansas 42 yard line.

After the first down, Mahomes used his legs to cut the distance to the goal line in half. His 21 yard carry gave the Red Raiders a 1st and 10 at the Arkansas 21 yard line. Two plays later, on 3rd & 10, Mahomes rushed for 15 yards to the Razorbacks 5 yard line.  Then, on 3rd & Goal from the 2 yard line, Mahomes rushed around left tackle and dove into the end zone for what ended up being the game-winning score; putting the Red Raiders up 28-21.

While Saturday's win is a high-point in Kliff Kingsbury's tenure at Texas Tech, his postgame comments will draw even more attention.

Kingsbury didn't mince words when when talking about Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema. "At the Texas high school coaches convention this summer, (Bielema) stood up and said, 'If you don't play with a fullback we'll kick your ass. If you throw it 70 times a game we'll kick your ass.' He just got his ass kicked twice in a row and probably next week by (Texas) A&M as well," Kingsbury said.

Next Saturday, Texas Tech hosts TCU in a game at 3:45 p.m. at Jones AT&T Stadium.
