Texas Tech Sweeps Kansas in a Dramatic 8-7 Victory Sunday
Texas Tech baseball (28-19, 9-12 BIG 12) rallied for 3 runs in the 9th inning to defeat Kansas (20-24, 9-12) 8-7 Sunday afternoon and sweeping a Big 12 Conference series for the first time since 2006.
The Jayhawks rallied trailing 5-4 in the top of the ninth with two outs as Tucker Tharp lifted a 2-1 pitch over the right field wall for a three-run homer, giving Kansas a 7-5 lead. Texas Tech would use late inning heroics for the second time this series with Barrett Barnes reaching base on a dropped strike 3, followed by a walk from Stephen Hagen, and a sacrifice fly Nick Popescu.
Kelby Tomlinson scored Barnes with a single to center to advance Hagen to third base and Bo Altobelli walked on a 3-1 pitch while ball four went wild and allowed Hagen to score to tie the game at 7-7. Nick Hanslik also reached base to give Tech the bases loaded with a hit-by-pitch bringing freshman Andre Wheeler to the plate. Wheeler took 4 straight pitches and walked as Tomlinson came in for the winning run.
Texas Tech returns to the diamond Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. hosting Dallas Baptist University from Dan Law Field.
