A Texas Tech tennis player has started off a championship match with a win.

Vitor Manzini defeated George Washington University’s Ulrik Thomsen in straight sets to advance to the second round at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men’s All-American Championships in the qualifying singles round.

The sophomore from Sao Paulo, Brazil will face either Pepperdine’s Jenson Turner or Texas A&M’s Niall Angus Wednesday morning in round two.

Manzini finished the 2010-2011 season ranked 41st in the country in doubles with Gonzalo Escobar, and was also named Academic All-Big 12 first team.

The ITA All-American Championships are being held in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
