Texas Tech vs. SMU – Game Preview
Texas Tech Red Raiders at SMU Mustangs
Friday, August 30th
Ford Stadium, Dallas
Kickoff: 7 pm CST, ESPN
The Kliff Kingsbury Era begins Friday night under the lights in Dallas against June Jones and the SMU Mustangs. The Red Raiders will have a freshman quarterback start with the back injury to sophomore Michael Brewer. Can Jones get the biggest victory in his sixth season at SMU or will the Raiders prevail for their new coach?
Why Texas Tech will win the game…
The Red Raiders have issues at quarterback with either Davis Webb or Baker Mayfield starting. Tech will have a new look offensive line anchored by Le’Raven Clark looking to gel against a very opportunistic Mustang Defense trying to get turnovers and rattle the young Tech QB’s. The deepest position group on the offense is running back with the likes of Kenny Williams and DeAndre Washington. Look for the Red Raiders to run the ball early and often against the SMU front seven that is replacing five starters from last year. The Red Raider Defense will have to make stops against the Mustang Offense with Hal Mumme on staff with Jones and crew.
Why SMU will win the game…
The Mustangs return Quarterback Garrett Gilbert for his second season in Dallas and with the help of Mumme on the sideline he can finally put together a season that everyone has expected of him. The Ponies have to replace bruising back Zach Line at running back and key receivers from 2012, but Tech was terrible against the run last season with a front seven mostly returning for Tech, but most of the secondary graduating. If the Mustangs find a passing game then hold on Red Raider fans.
What will happen…
The Red Raiders will struggle early on, but the jitters will be calmed and whichever freshman at quarterback will be helped by a strong ground game from Tech and Jace Amaro will help turn the tide after serving his first half suspension.
