Think about the women in your life; your mother, your sister, your aunt, your grandmother...for every 8 women you know, 1 will be diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2012, 14,980 women on the South Plains were diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Breast cancer is a big deal for everyone since we now know it can affect anyone, male or female and at virtually any age,” said Meggan Wilkes, registered nurse at Covenant Medical Group.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the world today, with 1.3 million people diagnosed annually. Of the people diagnosed, more than 1,900 of them are men. The exact cause of breast cancer is unknown, and at this time, there is no cure.

Since receiving her RN certification from South Plains College, Meggan has focused her efforts on obstetrics and gynecology.

“It was my work as an OB/GYN nurse that first sparked my interest in Susan G. Komen,” Meggan said. “We were seeing more and more women in our office battling this disease, and I wanted to do something to help.”

As Meggan became involved with the Lubbock area Susan G. Komen, she realized she could do even more. Forming a partnership with long-time Lubbock establishment Four Bar K, she started an annual lunch event to raise funds for breast cancer treatment and support programs; "Cowboys, Cowgirls and a Cure".

On September 26, 2014, Meggan will host the "5th Annual Cowboys, Cowgirls and a Cure" lunch at Four Bar K, with a goal to raise $3,500 for local treatment and support programs. With help from the local community, Meggan has already raised $1,500 through business sponsorships of the Lunch and retail product donations for the raffles.

“25% of the proceeds from the lunch will directly benefit women and men on the South Plains who are fighting breast cancer,” Meggan explained. “The proceeds are donated to the Lubbock area Susan G. Komen to help fund local screening, treatment, and support programs.”

“We are happy to work with Meggan each year on this important fundraiser,” said Chuck Kershner, owner of Four Bar K. “Every year it gets a little bigger, which is a great thing for Komen and local people diagnosed with breast cancer.”

The "5th Annual Cowboys, Cowgirls, and a Cure" lunch will be held on September 26, 2014, at Four Bar K at  302 East 82nd Street (1/2 Mile East of Tahoka HWY) from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The Lunch will include a BBQ buffet, live music by Jenni Dale Lord and Bo Garza, beer, wine, and raffle drawings, and is open for anyone to attend.
