The Dallas Cowboys Win Their Season Opener as They Defeat the New York Giants on Sunday Night

The Dallas Cowboys kicked off their 2013 season at home in the newly named AT&T Stadium against the New York “football” Giants.  These two teams hooked up last year in their season opener with the Cowboys coming out on top 24-17.  Tony Romo and company would look to have the same type of success in Sunday night’s contest.

Romo (Pictured on the Left) and the offense struggled to start the game, but by halftime they had found some rhythm and they led their divisional foes by a score of 13-10.  The run game struggled for the most part with their young offensive line showed their youth as they only had 83 yards total for the game.  DeMarco Murray was that run game as he ran the ball 20 times for 86 yards.

The real story of the game was the new defensive coordinator Monty Kiffen’s defense as they forced six New York turnovers with the last one being the most important.  It came late in the fourth quarter as Dallas corner back Brandon Carr stepped right in front of Eli Manning’s intended receiver and took the ball to the house to put the Cowboys up for good at 36-31.

The win marks the seventh time the Cowboys have beat the Giants in their season opener.  It also marks the first time they have defeated Eli and company in Jerry world (AT&T Stadium now).  It was not all bright spots as starter quarterback Tony Romo left the game in the final minutes of the first half with an apparent rib injury.  He would return to the game though and end up with over 250 yards passing but it also included a pick that help keep New York in the game.  Jerry talked about Tony’s injury after the game, he said “one tough player, one tough man, he will go out and play in pain and play hurt.”

Jason Witten was another bright spot on the offensive side of the ball as he compiled 70 yards receiving on seven catches and scored twice in the win.  The team will need to be much better if they want to continue on their success over the weekend.  This week they take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium with kickoff set for 12 pm and can be seen on FOX.
