When the time finally came for Amarillo's beloved bakery and sweet shop The Ruffled Cup to expand, Deanna Hurt says Lubbock was the obvious choice.

Hurt, who owns the newly opened The Ruffled Cup Lubbock, said she loves the city and felt residents would be "really receptive" to her unique bakery business.

"We have a lot of customers in our Amarillo store that are actually from Lubbock, and they have been begging us and begging us, 'please open a store in Lubbock, we love your concept, we love your cupcakes,'" said Hurt.

After doing some research, Hurt decided opening a Lubbock store was a must.

If variety is the spice of life, The Ruffled Cup is a veritable spice pantry.

The Lubbock sweet shop boasts well over 100 different cupcake options every week -- from the expected to the deliciously outrageous.

"We have over 181 flavors, and it just keeps growing," said Hurt. Each day, the business offers 20-24 flavors. "We have 10 daily flavors, those are our best sellers. And then we also have five rotating flavors," she said. But it doesn't stop there.

"We have what we call our special flavors, and those are the ones we get real creative with," Hurt said.

How creative? Try maple bacon, holy cannoli and creme brulee. Yum.

Her favorite cupcake flavor? "That's a hard one," she said before settling on one: "I would say my favorite right now is banana nutella. I love nutella. I'm literally addicted to it. It's a banana cake with nutella filling in the middle, than it has banana butter cream and nutella drizzle."

Hurt was able to get The Ruffled Cup in Lubbock off the ground through a combination of personal savings, a private lender and a small business loan.

"It's a lot of money to start a business, it's not cheap -- especially when you have a big idea and limited resources," Hurt said. "But for the most part, we self-funded this baby!"

Tips for Future Small Business Owners

"Always go with your gut. If you're doing anything at all, do it from your heart," Hurt said, adding: "Be prepared to work long hours, be prepared to make lots of sacrifices in your life."

Hurt explained that at the beginning it's hard, but sticking with it can pay off.

For now, Hurt is enjoying her new business and the hard work - and sugar - that goes into it.
