The Worst Team Name in All of Sports: The Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters
There are several stupid names given to teams throughout all of sports but I have to give the nod for worst name to the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters. The Texters are a professional basketball team in Philippine Basketball Association and joined as part of a 2 team expansion. They have been around since 1990 and in that 11 year time frame they have had 7 different names.
They started off as the Pepsi Hotshots when Luis Fransisco R. Lorenzo of the Pepsi Philippine's company established the franchise. They joined rival soda company Pop Cola and the PBA that year. During his 6 years of ownership, the team changed their names from the Pepsi Hotshots to the 7-Up Uncolas and, my personal favorite, the Pepsi Mega Bottlers (a name sure to strike fear into every opponent).
Alas, all great dynasties must come to an end and so did the ownership of Mr. Lorenzo. Although they never won any championship they were able to finish 2nd or 3rd in the 8 team conference. However, things quickly turned around when the telecommunications company Pilipino Telephone Corporation bought the team in 1996 and changed the name to the Mobiline Cellulars. Unfortunately, the Cellulars were unable to establish themselves as a true powerhouse in the PAB until they changed their name 2 more times from the Mobiline Cellulars to the Talk 'N Text Phone Pals and now to the current Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters. All these names are off of a prepaid cell phone line.
When they became the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters in 2008 they started running all over the PBA. Since 2008 they have won 3 PBA Championships. Teams now quake in fear when they hear they have to play the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters.
The PBA is full of downright embarrassing names for teams, ranging from the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to the Barako Bull Energy Boosters (I'm assuming Red Bull was already taken).
