1875 — Matthew Webb of England became the first man to swim the English Channel. (More info.)

1908 —Tommy Burns knocked out Bill Squires in the 13th round of their fight in Sydney, Australia to win the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)

1940 — Slugger Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox pitched the last two innings of a 12-1 Boston loss to the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park. (More info.)

1963 —John Pennel became the first outdoor pole-vaulter to clear 17 feet, jumping 17 feet 3/4 inches at the Florida Gold Coast A.A.U. meet in Miami. (More info.)

1975 — Ed Halicki of the San Francisco Giants no-hit the New York Mets, 6-0, at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. (More info.)

1989 — Baseball Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti permanently banned all-time major league hits leader Pete Rose from baseball after he concluded that Rose had bet on games, including those involving the Cincinnati Reds, whom he managed. (More info.)
